Watercolour
I have always enjoyed a creative outlet and my artistic pursuits have included needlework, quilting, sketching and a brief foray into oil painting. Before my father passed away in 1998 he had urged me to try watercolours but at that time, life was getting too much in the way. In 2002 I was in search of something new when a friend introduced me to watercolours. We played around for two days on the dining room table and I became entranced with the medium from the first moment.
Ink &Watercolour
After seven years of fascination with watercolours I began missing the simple act of drawing. In 2009 one of the members on WetCanvas did a tutorial on combining ink with watercolour. Her fun tutorial gave me the knowledge I needed to give it a try and I have recently produced a few paintings combining the two mediums.
I am a native of Montreal and grew up on the West Island . I spent several years in Toronto and another 22 years in Thunder Bay . I have been living in southeastern Ontario for the past 14 years.
Without formal instruction beyond high school art classes, I am self-taught and have learned all I paint through trial and error and a large library of instruction books by artists I enjoy. I believe my efforts are seeing the emergence of my own particular style and approach. While in sketching I favoured portraits and close-up details of larger scenes, my paintings have gravitated to landscapes with particular focus on water and persistent efforts to try to capture its character and movement.
My inspirational masters are the Impressionists, particularly Monet. I work from my home studio in Green Valley, Ontario utilizing my own photographs taken at home and abroad as reference.
Statement: I consider my work to be representational. My efforts are focused on trying to combine the spontaneous qualities of the watercolour medium with textural detail. My goals for each painting are a portrayal of atmosphere, texture, and movement while retaining an illusion to the rough edge and natural chaos of nature.
